Code 2174 (6 pt, advanced level), Spring (first half) 2008
This course deals with the technologies associated with integrating financial information systems across organizational boundaries, typically in order to achieve more efficient supply chain management. XML-based standards like ebXML and XBRL are covered.
This course is part of the integrated Program in Advanced Financial Information Systems. All students who have taken the courses ERP Systems and Data Warehousing and Data Mining are welcome to attend this course.
There are 7 pairs of 90-minute lectures scheduled, always in classroom 303 (in the main building, same floor above the study office) on Tuesday afternoons (14:30-18:00). The aim of these is to, as far as possible, tell you stuff that you need to know that isn't in the textbooks, and help you deal with the stuff that is.
Attendance is technically voluntary, but do bear in mind that the exams will draw on both the literature and the lectures, and that, really, as far as possible the lectures aim to complement and extend, not overlap, the material in the books. In practice, attending the lectures is an efficient use of your time, both with regard to learning and with regard to passing the course.
Guest lectures may be added - watch your mail!
A significant part of the learning process in this course consists of the hands-on experience of exploring the technologies we study, and their application to advanced financial information systems. This is organized as a series of three computer workshops.
The workshops are all structured in a similar manner. The topic, the assignment and support material, and the technical issues will be introduced during the second of that week's Monday afternoon lectures. On Thursday afternoons you will be assisted in getting started with the topic in the computer lab. You will do the main part of the work according to your own schedule, and submit your deliverable, as directed, in the form of web pages on the server. It is permitted and strongly recommended that you do the workshops in groups of two people - the choice of partners is free.
Attendance in class is nominally voluntary. This means we do not keep track, but you will find it difficult bordering on impossible to complete the deliverables unless you show up when we explain how to do it, and assist you with getting started.
The workshops are graded on a scale of 0 to 10 points each, and you need to submit all three and collect at least 15 points out of 30 possible in order to pass the course.

Also, you need to collect at least 15 points out of 30 possible from the three workshops. Your grade will be determined based on the total points (between 50 and 100).
