PAFIS - 2009-11

The structure of the program

After the restructuring of university studies in Finland, the so called Bologna process, a M.Sc. program like ours comprises two years of full time studies, equivalent to a total requirement of 120 credits, i.e. points. In the Master's Degree Programme in Advanced Financial Information Systems, the required 120 points are structured in the following blocks:

In practice, all the courses in the major subject, except for the seminars, are scheduled for the first year of the program. During the second year, the focus is on writing the thesis, and the remaining course in the major - the seminars - is one that directly relates to the thesis project. The freely chosen courses in other subjects can be taken whenever convenient during the two years. It is obviously a good idea to spread them over the available time, and given the heavy courseload in the major during the first year we recommend that most, but not all, of the freely chosen courses are left for the second year. Please bear in mind that 30 points are supposed to equal a full-time workload for half an academic year.
